Background Remover

Remove the background from a photo automatically with AI. Make it transparent, white or blue for ID photos, and download a PNG or JPG. Free and private: runs in your browser.

The AI model is downloaded once, then saved by your browser. Person mode is faster and best for photos of people.
Your photo is processed only in this browser and is never uploaded. The AI files are downloaded once from Hugging Face and jsDelivr and cached by your browser.

How to remove a photo background

  1. Choose Person for selfies, portraits and ID photos, or Object for products, food and pets.
  2. Drop or choose a JPG, PNG or WebP photo. The first time, wait while the AI model downloads.
  3. Check the Before and After view. The grey-and-white squares mean the background is transparent.
  4. Pick a background: transparent, white, blue or any colour. Use the Edge sharpness slider if the edges look blurry or spotty.
  5. Click Download. Transparent images save as PNG; images with a solid colour save as JPG at the original size.

Need an ID photo? Download the result with a white or blue background, then use our ID Photo Maker to crop it to 2x2, 1x1 or passport size and make a printable sheet.

Example

Ana needs a 2x2 photo with a white background for a job application, but her only good photo was taken in front of a cabinet at home. She chooses Person, uploads the photo and waits a few seconds while the model downloads for the first time. The cabinet disappears, she selects White and downloads the JPG. She then opens the ID Photo Maker, crops it to 2x2 and prints a 4R sheet with six copies at a photo kiosk.

Tips for a cleaner cut-out

  • Use a sharp, well-lit photo where you stand out from the background. A plain wall is best.
  • Avoid busy backgrounds and colours close to your hair or clothes (for example a black top against a dark wall).
  • Fine hair, eyeglasses, glass and see-through fabric are hard for any AI. Check the edges before printing.
  • Very large photos are processed at up to 4000 pixels on the longest side to save memory on phones.

Private by design

Many background removers upload your photo to their servers. This tool runs open-source AI models (MODNet and IS-Net, both Apache-2.0 licensed) directly in your browser using WebGPU or WebAssembly. Your photo is never sent anywhere. The only things downloaded are the model and engine files, which are the same for every visitor.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The background is removed by an AI model that runs inside your own browser, so your photo never leaves your phone or computer. To make this possible, your browser downloads the AI files once: the model from Hugging Face (about 6 MB for the Person mode or 84 MB for the Object mode) and the AI engine from the jsDelivr CDN (about 7 MB). Only these files are downloaded. Your photo is not sent with them, and the files are saved in your browser cache so the next photo starts faster.

Why is the first photo slow, and how much mobile data does it use?

The first time, your browser must download the AI files: about 13 MB in total for Person mode, or about 91 MB for Object mode. After that they come from your browser cache and only the processing time remains, usually a few seconds. If you are on mobile data, use Person mode or connect to Wi-Fi first. Clearing your browser data removes the cached files.

Can I use this for a 2x2 or passport ID photo with a white or blue background?

Yes. Remove the background, choose White or Blue, download the JPG, then open our ID Photo Maker to crop it to 1x1, 2x2 or passport size and make a print sheet. Whether the photo is accepted still depends on the office: check their rules on background colour, lighting and attire. Some offices do not accept edited photos.

Why are some parts of my photo cut wrongly?

AI background removal is not perfect. Loose or frizzy hair, see-through things like eyeglasses, veils and glass, busy backgrounds, and subjects whose colour is close to the background are the hardest. Try the Edge sharpness slider, use a photo with a plain background and good lighting, or switch between Person and Object mode.

Does it work on products, pets or objects?

Person mode is trained on photos of people and works best for portraits, selfies and ID photos. For products, food, pets and other objects, choose Object mode. It is more accurate on general photos but is a much larger one-time download (about 84 MB) and is slower on older phones.
